Sandra picked up her girls at the kindergarten.

On the way home they sang her a new song they had learned. She sang along smiling; their enthusiasm was contagious, but she was still trying to shake off her concern about spotting Josef’s car.

Had he been at the bank? Was it because he suspected something? Or did the relationship manager call him behind her back? She wouldn’t be surprised.

She parked the car, took the twins out of their child seats, and walked to the front door.

What was she going to say?

He was in the kitchen busy making supper. He smiled at her – a little stiffly? – but first had to listen while Anke and Bianca sang him their song too. He clapped his hands, hugged and kissed them.

She walked to him. ‘How was your day?’ she asked, held close in his embrace.

‘Good,’ he said. ‘I made good progress. Yours?’ Was his body a bit tense?

She searched for signs of normality, his open-hearted self. She sensed a reserve in him, and felt her own tension rise. ‘I saw your car parked in Ryneveld,’ she said.

‘Oh, ja. A master’s student who wanted some advice. We went for a coffee at Häzz.’

And then he squeezed her, and said: ‘I missed you.’

She relaxed, but not entirely. Because there was something a tiny bit different about him.
